Expressive Art Therapy

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for." – Georgia O’Keeffe

Tapping into the creative process and using the expressive arts in therapy can help illuminate and integrate what is hard or impossible to express through words alone. Children, teens and adults can benefit from engaging in expressive art therapy. A rich tapestry of varied mediums such as drawing, painting, sculpting, collaging, movement, poetry and music are used to awaken and engage what may need to be healed, changed or processed. Using expressive arts in therapy does not require any specific technical skills. I help clients move through, “I am not an artist or creative,”. Using the expressive arts in therapy can provide a new way of knowing oneself. Sometimes, simply inviting clients to explore and use art materials can provide a window into what needs to be addressed in the moment. At other times, I may suggest art therapy interventions to examine specific issues, memories or experiences.
